The Academy aspires to develop a learning network, expands the social network of the elders and provides a platform for mutual learning and communication conducive to enabling the elders, carers, residents, students and the staff of the housing authority to gain deeper understanding of the resources in the community. The HKMA has invited doctors to design the lesson plans, prepare teaching materials and conduct the classes. By providing courses related to elderly diseases and nursing, the elders can learn more about the causes of diseases and strengthen their self-care capacity on diseases prevention and diagnosis as early as possible. As for Social and Leisure courses, the courses intend to help the elders to cultivate leisure activities that enable the elders to meet new friends in their estates and within the district, and to build up their own personal social network. Additionally, studying in the Academy will allow the carers, family members of the elders and residents to assist their old aged family members with proper medication usage and nursing skills. The group of carers will also become more aware of the elders’ early signs of behavioral and personality changes and bring them for timely treatment.
