香港醫學會新冠疫苗外展接種服務
緊貼社區實際需要 盡心保護長者學童
多個非政府組織響應政府呼籲，在社區推出不同形式的新冠疫苗外展接種計劃，為行動不便的長者和殘疾人士注射新冠疾苗。不過，社區中亦有不少人士，因著種種原因未受能惠於其他計劃。香港醫學會經地區長者服務中心和特殊學校轉介，在剛過去的星期六，2022年4月2日，舉行「香港醫學會新冠疫苗外展接種服務」，組織醫生會員為葵青區和柴灣區的年長、不良於行的長者，提供到戶疫苗接種服務。當日，獲柴灣香港西區扶輪社匡智晨輝學校借出校舍舉行即場疫苗接種服務，為區內的長者和護老者，以及特殊教育需要學生注射新冠疫苗。參與到戶疫苗接種服務的長者主要是未獲其他疫苗接種服務所涵蓋，本會得知他們的需要，即時籌辦是次服務。醫學會亦會於稍後跟進為有需要的參加者接種第二/三劑疫苗。
97歲的林伯伯與93歲的妻子住在葵芳邨多年，夫婦二人均患有高血壓，平日甚少外出。新冠疫情出現第五波後，二人的兒子擔心父母會受感染，經長者中心得知醫學會可以安排醫生護士到戶注射疫苗，所以決定為父母報名。林伯伯夫婦認為醫生和護士到戶為長者接種疫苗是貼心的安排，讓他們這群留家、留在社區抗疫的老友記多一份保護，加上他們對醫生十分信任，對醫生到戶表示高興。為林伯夫婦接種疫苗的唐繼昇醫生認為上樓接種疫苗需要很多事前準備工作，包括預先參閱長者的病歷，到場後亦要親自詢問身體狀況，更需檢視長期服用的藥物，遇上表示憂慮的長者亦要耐心解釋。今次參與的長者均是較年長，平均年齡約85歲，同時患有多種慢性疾病或行動不便的，所以醫生在為他們接種疫苗後，亦會親自觀察最少20分鐘，確定他們沒有不適才離開，整個過程不能機械化地處理。林伯伯接種完第一劑新冠疫苗後即感謝到戶為他與太太注射疫苗的香港醫學會醫護團隊，並大讚唐醫生好手勢，打完針一點痛也沒有。
除了林伯伯夫婦，社區內亦有一些人士需要特別的打針安排，有特殊學習需要的學童就是一例。有份回到學校打新冠疫苗的希希(別名)今年12歲，媽媽表示之前嘗試過帶他到醫院接種疫苗，但他感到十分不安。經學校知道今次活動有醫生駐場，亦有充裕時間可以與醫生了解接種疫苗的細節，而且會場是在希希熟悉的校舍，又有校長、老師、社工在場，所以為他報名參加，而希希今次很勇敢，成功接種了疫苗，事後即時貼上老師贈送以作獎勵的貼紙，並展示了愉悅的笑容。
公務員事務局局長聶德權，JP 亦抽空到場支持是次活動，並與在學校現場接種疫苗的學生及長者傾談，了解他們的健康狀況。聶局長感謝香醫學會舉辦今次包括到戶及在學校的疫苗接種服務，令居住於葵青區及柴灣區的居民受惠。
香港醫學會會長蔡堅醫生指是次活動有助提升疫苗接種率，協助增加本港的社區免疫力，並鼓勵更多未接種新冠疫苗的長者和其家人不要再猶疑，應盡快接種，保障個人健康。蔡醫生又指香港醫學會自2016年起一直開展多項社區服務計劃，獲得醫生、醫科生、護士和其他醫療人員積極參與。他期望醫學會將來繼續參與拓展基層醫療，服務社區醫療需要，秉承醫學會「維護民康」的精神。

The HKMA COVID-19 Outreach Vaccination Service
Filling the gap and protecting the vulnerable
Several NGOs have launched a variety of outreach programmes in response to the Government’s call to promote COVID-19 vaccination for elderly and people with disabilities. Still, not all vulnerable groups can be covered by these programmes for various reasons. The Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA), having learnt from our community partners this unmet need of elderly and students with special educational needs (SEN), organized the “COVID-19 Outreach Vaccination Service” on Saturday, 2 April 2022. Doctors were recruited to offer home vaccination to elderly with low mobility in Kwai Tsing and Chai Wan districts. On the same day, a vaccination centre was set up at Rotary Club of HK Island West Hong Chi Morninghope School in Chai Wan to provide vaccination service for elderly, their carers and the school’s students. Many of the elderly who joined our service were not covered by other outreach or home vaccination programmes. Seeing the pressing need to protect this vulnerable group, the HKMA has taken prompt action and pull together to start the service within a short period of time. The HKMA will also follow-up with the participants for the 2nd and 3rd doses.
97-year-old Grandpa LAM and his 93-year-old wife have been living in Kwai Fong Estate for many years. The elderly couple have hypertension and stay at home most of the time during the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their son has enrolled them to the HKMA home vaccination programme when he heard about the programme from elderly centre. The elderly couple considered such arrangement was thoughtful to the elderly by offering extra protection to them. They regarded doctors very trustworthy and were delighted at the visit. Dr. TONG Kai Sing, who vaccinated the elderly couple, shared that he had done preparation for the best protection of the elderly before the service day. Participating doctors spent time to read medical background information before the visit. During the vaccination, the doctors needed to check again if the elders’ health conditions were stable and medicine taken for their chronic diseases. The doctors also spent time to explain and offer comforting words to worrying elderly. Participants enrolled to the home vaccination programme were generally from the ”Old-Old” stratum, with 85 as the mean age, accompany with several chronic illnesses or physical impairment. The home vaccination team doctors would wait for at least 20 minutes after the vaccination to ensure the elderly were in good condition before departure. The whole process could not be done in a mechanical way by simply matching people to be vaccinated. Grandpa LAM thanked Dr. TONG and the team sincerely and said he had not felt any pain with the vaccination.
Except elderly like Grandpa LAM and his wife, students with SEN also needed special vaccination arrangement. Hei Hei (pseudo), 12 years old, is a student of the Morninghope School. Hei Hei’s mother said that Hei Hei had resistance to have vaccination in public hospital. She was glad to know from the school that the HKMA would organize this programme at the school which would allow sufficient time for the parents to directly communicate with the participating doctors. As Hei Hei was familiar with the school and the teachers, he was not too anxious during the vaccination. One could tell how well Hei Hei managed vaccination this time, seeing the smile on his face and the cartoon stickers given by the teachers recognizing his bravery!
Mr. Patrick NIP, JP, Secretary for the Civil Service, spared time from his busy schedule to visit the participating elderly and students at the Morninghope School. Mr. NIP thanked the HKMA for organizing the vaccination service benefiting the residents in Chai Wan and Kwai Tsing districts.
Dr. CHOI Kin, President of the HKMA, said the service was established to boost vaccination uptake rate for community immunity. Taking the opportunity, the HKMA President encouraged elderly and their family who had not yet vaccinated to take immediate action. Dr. CHOI was glad that the HKMA has organized several community healthcare projects since 2016 with the continuous support from doctor members, medical students and other healthcare professionals. Thriving to safeguard health of the people, Dr. CHOI expected to see more of these programmes to be rolled out by the HKMA in the years as a step to strengthen primary healthcare in our community.
