Community Health Academy

Commencement Ceremony of the Health Academy for the Elderly

To extend the Hong Kong Medical Association’s motto, “To Safeguard the Health of the People”, and to drive the medical sector in active participation in community services, so as to fortify the concept of “Medical-Social Collaboration in the Community”, the HKMA was funded by the Community Investment and Inclusion Fund (CIIF) to run a 2-year Project named “Community Health Academy”.  The Project period is November 2016 to October 2018 and services will be delivered in Chai Wan district.  We adopt the model of multi-dimensional collaboration by connecting medical, social, community, school and housing sectors.  The Project consists of 3 main areas:

(A)  Health Academy for the Elderly: to enhance health awareness and the sense of disease prevention of the elders and residents, and to strengthen the social network of the elders.

(B)   Outreach Team for the Elderly: to recruit medical doctors and families, medical students, elderly, residents and secondary school students as outreach ambassadors and pay regular and continuous home visits to the singleton, coupled or hidden elders living in Hing Wah Estates, and help strengthen the social and support networks among the elders, carers and neighborhood.

(C)   “One Service Unit One Doctor” Scheme: to fortify the concept of “Medical-Social Collaboration” in the community and optimize the health services for the elderly.

[More information about “Community Health Academy” is attached in “Supplementary Information”]

“The Commencement Ceremony of the Health Academy for the Elderly” was fruitfully launched in Chai Wan in this afternoon.  The participants were being introduced and briefed with the Project content and courses to be organized by the Academy.  Blood pressure measure and medical consultation were offered on-site to the participants by medical doctors and medical students as well.  The first session of the Health Academy will be held in January 2017.  Moreover, the Pledging Ceremony cum First Visit and Volunteer Training of the “Outreach Team For the Elderly” will be held on Saturday, 7 January 2017 in Hing Wah Estate II.

Mr. CHEUNG Kin Chung, Matthew, GBS, JP, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, was invited to officiate the event with other guests and also led the participants on group exercise.  Mr. CHEUNG felt delighted by seeing the active involvement of medical doctors and medical students on community services, and to instill more medical and health elements to the inherent community resources, for the benefits of the community.  Mr. CHEUNG anticipated that “Community Health Academy” can help encouraging other professional bodies to participate in community services, and to create more social capitals for the community.  Mr. CHEUNG again thanked the HKMA in taking a further step on promoting the “Medical-Social Collaboration in the Community” through the Project, he wished the Project every success!

Being a medical doctor, and also the Chairman of both CIIF Committee and Elderly Commission, Dr. LAM Ching Choi, BBS, JP, was excited in attending the event because he noticed that the “Community Health Academy” would mobilize many medical doctors and medical students to collaborate with various social services units and schools in organizing health education programmes and home visits on a regular basis.  Dr. LAM hoped that more elders and residents would be benefited from the Project, and a more inclusive and comfortable living environment could be enjoyed in the community.

The HKMA President recalled that the HKMA Community Service Committee was set up 2 years ago and a number of interested programmes had been organized with the full supports from the HKMA members, including the quarterly visiting events, Medical Students-Secondary School Students Mentorship Programme, and the English Summer Camp.  The HKMA always encourage community doctors and different organizations in the community to co-organize public health education programmes through our 9 community networks.  The President especially thanked the colleagues of the Sub-Committee on Community Health Academy and the members practising in the Hong Kong East districts on driving the programmes.
