Diabetic Kidney Sunday Day Camp

 

In Hong Kong, there are approximately 700,000 diabetic patients, making up to 10% of the population.  Among these patients, over 90% are type 2 diabetes, which often caused by heredity, unhealthy diet, obesity and lack of physical exercises.  Improper control of diabetic mellitus will lead to various degrees of complications, including acute and chronic complications.  When the body’s small blood vessels are injured and nerves are damaged which causes renal failure, one of the common chronic complications, Diabetic Kidney Disease, will existed.  Without appropriate management, patients of diabetic kidney disease would need more complicated and long-term treatments such as peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis or kidney transplantation.

 

Most of the Hong Kong people do not know diabetes mellitus can lead to kidney disease because the symptoms of Diabetic Kidney Disease are not manifested.  An ounce of prevention is far better that a pound of cure.  To prevent complications of diabetes mellitus and results in the serious Diabetic Kidney Disease, enhancing the public awareness on such disease and learn the appropriate disease management methods, e.g. consistent weight management, eat a balance diet and regular exercises, are essential.

  

The Hong Kong Medical Association co-organized a public event entitled “Diabetic Kidney Sunday Day Camp” with the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital (HKBH) and the Hong Kong Nephrology Group (HKNG) yesterday, to educate the public on diabetes management and prevention of diabetic kidney disease.  The event was held at the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, with over a hundred participants attended.  Dr. KO Wing Man, BBS, JP, Secretary for Food and Health, being the officiating guest, initiated the event with Dr. SHIH Tai Cho, Louis, JP, HKMA President, Dr. YU Wai Yin, Alex, HKBH Chief Executive Officer, and Dr. HO Chung Ping, MH, JP, Chairman of the HKNG. 

 

Following the opening ceremony, three speakers including Specialist in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Specialist in Nephrology and registered dietitian, gave public health talks on “Diabetes Mellitus”, “Diabetic Kidney Disease” and “Prevention on Diabetes Mellitus” respectively.  There were medical checkup booths set up at the venue to provide blood glucose (BG) and BMI measurements for the participants.  In addition, participants were required to take both pre-and postprandial BG measurements for comparison and receive medical consultation and advices by doctors. 

 

The organizers would like to remind the public on the importance of effective management of diabetes mellitus and prevention of diabetic kidney disease.

一起面對糖尿腎病週日日營

 

本港現時約有七十多萬糖尿病患者,即約十份一的人口。患者當中超過90%為二型糖尿病人,成因多與遺傳、不良飲食習慣、肥胖及缺乏運動等因素有關。糖尿病若控制不當,患者會有機會出現不同程度的併發症,包括急性和慢性兩種。慢性併發症中最常見的一種是由於微血管和神經系統受損而導致腎衰竭,即糖尿腎病。糖尿腎病若處理不當,便需要接受洗肚(腹膜透析)、洗血(血液透析)、甚至換腎(腎臟移植)等複雜和長期的治療方法。

 

香港人普遍對糖尿病會演變為腎病的認知不足,因為糖尿腎病的初期病徵並不明顯。預防遠勝治療。要預防糖尿病出現併發症而導致糖尿腎病的嚴重後果,必須提升市民對相關疾病的認識,從而學會有效管理糖尿病的方法,包括持續的體重控制、健康飲食、和定期運動等。

 

有見及此,香港醫學會與香港浸信會醫院及香港腎科團隊於昨日特別舉辦名為「一起面對糖尿腎病週日日營」,讓市民了解管理糖尿病和預防糖尿腎病的資訊。活動假香港浸信會醫院進行,共有超過一百名市民參與。當日,食物及衞生局局長高永文醫生, BBS, JP獲邀出席並擔任主禮嘉賓,與香港醫學會會長史泰祖醫生, JP、香港浸信會醫院行政總監余惠賢醫生及香港腎科團隊主席何仲平醫生, MH, JP,一同主持開幕典禮。

 

活動揭幕後安排三節由內分泌及糖尿科專科醫生、腎病科專科醫生和註冊營養師主講的健康講座,題目分別是「糖尿病面面觀」、「預防『糖尿腎病』良方」及「防『糖』於未然」。現場更提供多項測試,包括血糖及量度腰臀比例等,參加者還需量度餐前血糖和於醫院飯堂享用午餐後再作血糖測試作比較,讓醫護人員了解其病歷,最後由醫生為參加者提供即場諮詢。

 

主辦單位希望透過活動向市民宣傳有效管理「糖尿病」和預防「糖尿腎病」的重要性。
