PRESS

RELEASE

30 December 2017

“Spring Sowers” Organ Donation Promotion Walk

The Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) and the Hong Kong Society of Transplantation (HKST) will jointly organize an Organ Donation Promotion Walk (Walk) entitled “Spring Sowers”, on 7 January 2018 at Mui Wo to arouse public awareness of the importance of organ donation and encourage Hong Kong citizens to register with the Centralised Organ Donation Register (CODR). The event is co-organized by the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, Hong Kong Kidney Foundation, Hong Kong Transplant Sports Association, Lions Kidney Educational Centre & Research Foundation Hong Kong Organ Donation Action Group and Rotary Club of Hong Kong Northwest, Mui Wo Rural Committee would be the supporting organization.

Dr. HO Chung Ping, MH, JP, Vice-President of HKMA and Chairman of Spring Sowers, said at the press conference that “Spring Sowers” denoted that organ donation promotion was a long term sowing process. The Committee wished to organize the event every year as an action to support Organ Donation. The Opening Ceremony of the Walk will be held on 7 January 2018 at Mui Wo Recreation Centre at 10 a.m. Prof. CHAN Siu Chee, Sophia, JP, Secretary for Food and Health, Dr WONG Ka Hing, JP, Controller of Centre for Health Protection and Dr. Pierre CHAN, Legislative Councilor would attend the Opening Ceremony as officiating guests. After the Opening, participants would walk pass South Garden Café, Man Mo Temple, Luk Tei Tong Watch Tower, Hung Shing Temple, and finally to the Five Cent Bridge. Volunteer escorts from the Mui Wo Rural Committee will lead the participants to experience the natural beauty and explore the depth of the history and culture of Mui Wo. Till now, more than 100 citizens registered for the Walk, some of whom regained new life through organ transplantation. After the Walk, each participant would mobilize five friends and relatives to register at CODR to spread love and seed of hope in an extensive way.

Dr. William LEE, President of HKST, mentioned that the patients and their family are suffering from the physical discomfort and distress during the long-waiting process for organ transplant. Organ donation is a ray of hope for them and every decision we made can change their lives. He also addressed the severe shortage of transplantable organs in Hong Kong, with over 2,000 local patients and their family waiting desperately. In order to shorten the waiting time for organ transplant and to bring hope to these patients, active support for organ donation by the public is critically important.

Dr. CHAU Ka Foon, Co-Chairperson of Hong Kong Organ Donation Action Group, addressed the number of registration on Central Organ Donation Registry was only 278,462 up to 22 Dec 2017, which is around 3.7% of Hong Kong population. The deceased had not expressed their wish to donate organ after death is one major reason for families’ refusal. In response to Department of Health’s slogan in the Organ Donation Day this year “Organ Donation - Let's Talk!”, the Committee encourages family members to talk and express their wish of organ donation so that their wish can be made possible by the consent made on behalf of them in the very difficult and sad moment. Registering in CODR is one way to express their wish.

An organ transplant recipient also joined the press conference to share his story. Mr. WAI Siu Yung was diagnosed with end-stage Liver Cirrhosis in 1997, his wife donated part of her liver to save his life. After a long rest after the transplantation, he is now a gold-medalist in athletics. He wishes more people can share love and bring hopes to the sufferers and their families. Every donated organ is a life opportunity of people in need.
