“Spring Sowers” Organ Donation Promotion Walk

Today, the Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) and the Hong Kong Society of Transplantation (HKST) jointly organized an Organ Donation Promotion Walk (the Walk) entitled “Spring Sowers” at Mui Wo.  Prof. CHAN Siu Chee, Sophia, JP, Secretary for Food and Health, Dr. WONG Ka Hing, JP, Controller of Centre for Health Protection, Dr. Hon CHAN Pierre, Legislative Councilor and representatives of all co-organizers attended the Opening Ceremony.

Prof. CHAN Siu Chee, Sophia, JP, Secretary for Food and Health, mentioned that organ transplant was the only hope for most patients and their family.  A culture of organ donation has been cultivated in Hong Kong.  She hoped more members of the public would recognise the importance of organ donation and register with the CODR.  She also called on the public to share their wishes of organ donation to other family members.

Dr. HO Chung Ping, MH, JP, Vice-President of HKMA and Chairman of Spring Sowers, said that “Spring Sowers” denoted that organ donation promotion was a long term sowing process.  He wished to hold these events every year on a regular basis.  Dr. CHAN Yee Shing, Alvin, Vice President of the HKMA, composed a theme song "Second Life" for the Walk and sang it along with a group of organ donation recipients at the Opening Ceremony.

Over 100 participants participated the Walk with their full support.  Among the participants, there were organ transplant recipients.  All participants started the Walk at the Mui Wo Recreation Centre at 10:30 a.m. today. After the Opening, participants walked pass South Garden Café, Man Mo Temple, Luk Tei Tong Watch Tower, Hung Shing Temple, and finally to the Five Cent Bridge. It took participants about 1.5 hours to finish.  After the Walk, every participant would mobilize five friends and relatives to register with CODR to spread love and seed of hope in an extensive way.

The event was co-organized by the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, Hong Kong Kidney Foundation, Hong Kong Transplant Sports Association, Lions Kidney Educational Centre, The Hong Kong Liver Foundation, Organ Donation Action Group, Rotary Club of Hong Kong Northwest, the supporting organization is Mui Wo Rural Committee.

The Hong Kong Medical Association calls on more citizens to register with CODR to help patients who are waiting for organs.  We hope the value of life could be extended through organ transplant with the power of love.
