PRESS

RELEASE

3 January 2019

“Spring Sowers” Organ Donation Promotion Walk

The Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) and the Hong Kong Society of Transplantation (HKST) will jointly organize an Organ Donation Promotion Walk (Walk) entitled “Spring Sowers”, on 13 January 2019 at Tung Chung to arouse public awareness of the importance of organ donation and encourage Hong Kong citizens to register with the Centralised Organ Donation Register (CODR). The event is co-organized by the Field and Mountain Division, Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, Hong Kong Kidney Foundation, Hong Kong Organ Donation Action Group, Hong Kong Transplant Sports Association, Lions Clubs International District 303 - Hong Kong & Macao, China, Lions Kidney Educational Centre & Research Foundation, Rotary District 3450 and The Hong Kong Liver Foundation.

Dr. HO Chung Ping, MH, JP, President of HKMA and Chairman of Spring Sowers, said at the press conference that “Spring Sowers” denoted that organ donation promotion was a long term sowing process. The Committee wished to organize the event every year as an action to support Organ Donation. The Opening Ceremony of the Walk will be held on 13 January 2019 at Tung Chung Citygate Outlet Musical Fountain at 10 a.m. Dr. CHUI Tak-yi, JP, Under Secretary for Food and Health would attend the Opening Ceremony as officiating guests. After the Opening, participants would walk pass Tin Hau Temple, Chek Lap Kok New Village, Tung Chung Fort, Tung Chung River, Tung Chung Hau Wong Temple, and finally back to the starting point. Till now, near 400 citizens registered for the Walk, some of whom regained new life through organ transplantation. After the Walk, each participant would mobilize five friends and relatives to register at CODR to spread love and seed of hope in an extensive way.

Dr. William LEE, President of HKST, mentioned that Hong Kong has been facing a shortfall in supply of organs. Patients and their family are waiting desperately for a successful match. Unfortunately, some patients passed away during the long-waited process. There are a lot of methods to sign up in the Centralised Organ Donation Register, such as online application, through mail and fax. One should also notify his family about the will in order to avoid misunderstandings. Every decision can save up to 7 patients’ lives.

Dr. CHAU Ka Foon, Co-Chairperson of Hong Kong Organ Donation Action Group, addressed the number of registration on Central Organ Donation Registry was only 297,337 up to 28 December 2018, accounting for about 4% of the HK population. Investigation showed only 1/4 of those willing to donate organs are in fact registered on line, half because they are not familiar with the registration system. In additional to encourage citizens to express their wish to family members, we should explore ways to assist for on line registration.

An organ transplant recipient also joined the press conference to share his story. Mr. IP Siu Long underwent a heart transplant surgery in 2014 and has now recovered. He emphasized on the importance of organ donation, every donation matters and are all inspiring. He wishes more people would support organ donation as it gives hope to people in need.
