PRESS

RELEASE

13 January 2019

“Spring Sowers” Organ Donation Promotion Walk

The Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) and the Hong Kong Society of Transplantation (HKST) jointly organized an Organ Donation Promotion Walk (the Walk) entitled “Spring Sowers” at Tung Chung today.  Dr. CHUI Tak-yi, JP, Under Secretary for Food and Health, and representatives of all co-organizers attended the Opening Ceremony.

Dr. CHUI Tak-yi, JP, Under Secretary for Food and Health, mentioned that organ transplant was the only hope for most patients and their family.  He said, "There are more than 2 000 patients waiting for organ transplants in Hong Kong every day.  However, among the more than 100 brain stem dead patients who are eligible as organ donors every year, only 40 to 50 per cent of their families give consent for organ donation.  We hope more people would recognise the importance of organ donation by registering with the Centralised Organ Donation Register (CODR) to share their wishes of organ donation to other family members.  This can help the bereaved family better understand the deceased’s wish to rekindle lives of other people and agree to organ donation in the future."

Dr. HO Chung Ping, MH, JP, President of HKMA and Chairman of Spring Sowers, said that “Spring Sowers” denoted that organ donation promotion was a long term sowing process.  He wished to hold these events every year on a regular basis. KIDS' Dream Choir from Princess Margaret Hospital, performed their song "新生有你" at the Opening Ceremony. Our ambassador Ms. Iris LAM and Mr. Antonio LAM, Asian Games athletes, Mr. Steve LO, World Marathon Majors finisher, also attended the Ceremony to support the event.

Around 400 participants participated the Walk with their full support.  Among the participants, there were organ transplant recipients.  All participants started the Walk at the Citygate Musical Fountain at 10:30 a.m. today. They walked pass Tin Hau Temple, Chek Lap Kok New Village, Tung Chung Fort, Tung Chung River, Hau Wong Temple, and finally back to the starting point. It took participants about 2 hours to finish. After the Walk, every participant would mobilize five friends and relatives to register with CODR to spread love and seed of hope in an extensive way.

The event is co-organized by the Field and Mountain Division, Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, Hong Kong Kidney Foundation, Hong Kong Organ Donation Action Group, Hong Kong Transplant Sports Association, Lions Clubs International District 303 - Hong Kong & Macao, China, Lions Kidney Educational Centre & Research Foundation, Rotary District 3450 and The Hong Kong Liver Foundation.

The Hong Kong Medical Association calls on more citizens to register with CODR to help patients who are waiting for organs.  We hope the value of life could be extended through organ transplant with the power of love.
