Charity Concert for Paediatric Home Respiratory Support Society

The Hong Kong Medical Association Charitable Foundation(the Foundation) will stage its Annual Charity Concert on Sunday, 16 July 2023 at the Academic Community Hall, Hong Kong Baptist University.  This year, Paediatric Home Respiratory Support Society (PHRESS) was selected as the beneficiary.  All funds raised, without any cost deduction, will be used to support PHRESS to increase public awareness on the children who are home ventilation support users and improve the quality of life of them and their families.

Dr. CHAN, Pierre, Vice-President of the Hong Kong Medical Association(HKMA), mentioned that the HKMA founded in 1920 brings together all medical practitioners serving the people of Hong Kong.  Upholding the motto “Safeguarding the health of the people”, the HKMA strives to enhance the healthcare system in Hong Kong and enrich the medical knowledge of the general public all along.  The HKMA is well aware that there are people desperately in need of assistance and concern.  The HKMA has been raising funds for people in need for 30 years through the public performances of its Choir and Orchestra.  Dr. YEUNG Hip Wo, Victor, Chairman of the Foundation, told that The Foundation was established by the HKMA to coordinate charitable activities and allocate the raised funds, so that more underprivileged groups in the community could be reached. Dr. YEUNG expressed it was unanimously agreed to grant the support to PHRESS this year as their program would directly improve the well-being of the patients and their families. In support of this worthy course, the HKMA would bear all production and administration expenses of the charity concert, which are about HK$120,000. He also called for the loving and generous support of the public.

Ms. Wenus CHAN, Chairperson of PHRESS, stated that PHRESS was established in 2017 and registered as a charity organisation in 2019.  There are two main reasons for its establishment:

  1. Provide support to home ventilation support users and their families
  2. Raise public awareness and concern about the home ventilation support users and their families

Ms. Chan is the mother of a 11-year old boy who was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type I at a young age. His daily life depends on different equipment to support breathing, mucus suction has to be done regularly and he is on wheelchair.  As a mother with a daily job, Ms. Chan understands the pressure of the caretaker.  By joining PHRESS, she gets the support from meeting different medical professionals and patients.  PHRESS organises talks and seminars, inviting doctors, nurses and patients for sharing, providing members with caretaking and nursing  information, let patients and their families get the encouragement and support along the path and not feel lonely any more!  The funds raised from the charity concert will be used to make public educational videos, raise public awareness and concern about the home ventilation support users and their families.  PHRESS seeks public support!

During the press conference, another sharer, Josy, who was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type I since she was three months old.  Her lower body is static, only the thumb and the index fingers of her right hand can move.  Yet, with her tremendous determination, she overcame her body constraint and limitation, she graduated from the University of Hong Kong with the bachelor degree in English Literature in 2022.  She is the first person with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type I who has a university degree.  She is pursuing her master degree currently.  She also shared her school and daily life when she came across the misconception the public had on home ventilation support users.

During Josy’s university years, apart from the need for accessible facilities, she was no different from other students.  She recalled that her classmates were curious about her, yet they would not dare to talk to her, until the lecturer separated them into groups then Josy could join them.  Some of the classmates later became her buddies in university. Josy found that some young people had misconception on the home ventilation support users, e.g. they thought that changing air of the home ventilation support would spread germs which made them avoid talking to her.  Later, Josy took the initiative to explain to them with the right information about home ventilation support, once they understood, the misconception did not last.  Also, there were a few times she was told by the security guards of the malls to use the escalators.  Yet, it was very risky for them to use escalators, she needed to explain that wheelchair users could not use escalators actually.  Though Josy and other patients use home ventilation support, they are no different from other people.  She hopes that this charity concert can raise funds so more public especially young people can understand home ventilation support users, so they will not be afraid of getting in touch.
