The HKMA Women’s Health Month

Love Yourself: Women’s Wellness Starts with Self-Care

The latest statistics from the Hong Kong Cancer Registry reveal women aged 20 to 44 experience over double the incidence of new cancer cases versus men of the same age bracket.  This alarming trend of cancers arising at younger ages in the female population warrants attention.  In response, the Hong Kong Medical Association (“the HKMA”) launched “Women’s Health Month” in March, rolling out a series of health education initiatives through various platforms to raise awareness of women’s health issues throughout the community.

This campaign echoes International Women’s Day on 8 March with the slogan “Love Yourself: Women’s Wellness Starts with Self-Care”.  It encourages all women to care for both their physical and mental health through preventive care and regular screenings, allowing their goddess nature to shine through.  As the lead of “Women's Health Month”, the HKMA Hon Secretary and Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dr LING, Siu Chi Tony remarked, “Nowadays, Hong Kong women balance crucial family and work duties, their health often becomes sidelined.  As doctors, we should proactively advocate for women of any age to take ownership of their health – through self-awareness, logging health data, timely doctor visits, and routine checkups – to maintain well-rounded health.”

To help women of all ages understand the importance of prioritising early detection and timely treatment of diseases, the HKMA has created several educational videos addressing under-discussed female health issues and explaining symptoms of common cancers affecting women.  A series of public health education videos on women’s health are being shared on the HKMA’s YouTube channels (@the Hong Kong Medical Association) and Instagram page (@the_hkma).  The HKMA has also launched a dedicated women’s health webpage (https://health.thkma.org/womenshealth) providing important health information for women at different life stages.  Through these digital resources, the campaign hopes to start important conversations and cultivate female inner strength and shine from within.  On the other hand, the HKMA is hosting two Continuing Medical Education seminars for its doctors members.  The first seminar will discuss “Updates in Cervical Cancer Screening Guidelines from HKCOG”, bringing doctors up to speed on recent changes.  The second seminar addresses “Why Menopause Presents a Public Health Challenge”, enhancing support for women during this life transition.

Fulfilling its mission to “safeguard the health of the people”, the HKMA established an early Health Education Committee to actively promote various health initiatives.  The Committee regularly reviews past work and formulates new promotion strategies based on different public health issues.  This “Women’s Health Month” aims to share health information with women of all ages in an engaging and light-hearted way, demonstrating another facet of the HKMA’s education efforts.  Going forward, the HKMA will lead more public health campaigns, including “Men’s Health Month”, “Adult Immunisation Campaign” and “Mental Health Month”.  It will also continue producing health education videos in various series and regularly updating topic-specific health pages (https://health.thkma.org) to provide an important online health information resource for the community.
