“Spring Sowers” Organ Donation Promotion Walk

The Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) and the Hong Kong Society of Transplantation (HKST) jointly organized an Organ Donation Promotion Walk (the Walk) entitled “Spring Sowers” at Tung Chung on 5 January 2020.  Prof. CHAN Siu Chee, Sophia, JP, Secretary for Food and Health and Dr. Hon CHAN Pierre, Legislative Councilor and representatives of all co-organizers attended the Opening Ceremony.

Prof. CHAN Siu Chee, Sophia, JP, Secretary for Food and Health, expressed that organ transplant was the only hope for most patients and their family. She said " Organ donation needs long-term public education. The name of “Spring Sowers” is best to explain this sowing period.  I hope that more people would recognise the importance of organ donation and cultivate a culture of giving hope to the needy in the city."

Dr. HO Chung Ping, MH, JP, President of HKMA and Chairman of Spring Sowers, said that “Spring Sowers” denoted that organ donation promotion was a long term sowing process.  He wished to hold these events every year on a regular basis.  A Group of doctors and organ transplant recipients, as well as the KIDS' Dream Choir performed at the Opening Ceremony for promoting the importance of organ donation.

Mr. Wilson CHENG, District Governor of Rotary International District 3450 and Lion Alexander WONG, District Governor of Lions Clubs International District 303 - Hong Kong & Macao, China spoke about their willingness to support organ donation at the ceremony.

Around 300 participants participated the Walk with their full support.  Among the participants, there were organ transplant recipients.  All participants started the Walk at the Citygate Musical Fountain at 10:30 a.m. They walked pass Tin Hau Temple, and witness the valuable natural heritage and biodiversity of Tung Chung River, and returned to the starting point.  It took participants about 2 hours to finish.  After the Walk, every participant would mobilize five friends and relatives to register with CODR to spread love and seed of hope in an extensive way.

The event is co-organized by BUPA, Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital, Field and Mountain Division, Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, Hong Kong Organ Donation Action Group, Hong Kong Transplant Sports Association, Hong Kong Women Doctors Association, Lions Clubs International District 303 - Hong Kong & Macao, China, Lions Kidney Educational Centre & Research Foundation, Quality Healthcare Medical Centre, Rotary District 3450 and Union Hospital.

The Hong Kong Medical Association calls on more citizens to register with CODR to help patients who are waiting for organs.  We hope the value of life could be extended through organ transplant with the power of love.
